Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, formerly known
internationally as Persia until 1935, is a country in Central Eurasia,
located on the north-eastern shore of the Persian Gulf. The name Iran
is a cognate of Aryan, and means 'Land of the Aryans'. In terms of
size, Iran has a total area of 1.648 million sq km which is slightly
larger than Alaska. It has 1.636 million sq km land area and 12,000 sq

republic in 1979 after the ruling monarchy was overthrown and the shah
was forced into exile. Conservative clerical forces established a
theocratic system of government with ultimate political authority
vested in a learned religious scholar referred to commonly as the
Supreme Leader who, according to the constitution, is accountable only
to the Assembly of Experts. The population of Iran is approximately

Muslim religion. Official and most common language of those people are
Persian and Caspian. It has 51% of Persian people and rest are Azeri,
Gilaki, Mazandarani, Baloch, Turkmen, Arab and Lur people. Iran's
economy is marked by an inefficient state sector, reliance on the oil
sector (which provides 85% of government revenues), and statist
policies that create major distortions throughout. Most economic
activity is controlled by the state. Private sector activity is
typically small-scale workshops, farming, and services. Iran's gross
domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $278
billion with GDP of $4,119 per capita.
